The Road to Heart of Mind Therapy: A Journey of Resilience

The path to building Heart of Mind Therapy was anything but smooth for Kietha Adams. It was a road paved with determination, setbacks, and, ultimately, triumph. Her story is one of perseverance—a testament to the power of believing in oneself, even when faced with adversity.

Balancing Dreams, Work, and Motherhood

Before she was a thriving business owner and therapist, Kietha was a dedicated teacher and a mother of three, juggling the demands of her career, family, and education. Pursuing her master's degree while working full-time was no easy feat. Late nights, early mornings, and moments of exhaustion became her reality, but she never let go of her vision. She knew that she was meant to help people heal—and that meant pushing through, even when the weight of her responsibilities felt overwhelming.

The Challenges of Being an Associate Therapist

After earning her degree, Kietha stepped into the field as an associate therapist in a group practice. At first, she was eager to gain experience and make an impact. However, it wasn’t long before she realized that the structure of the practice was far from fair.

  • The pay was inadequate, not reflecting the time and effort she poured into her clients.

  • Her professionalism and work ethic were exploited—she went above and beyond to improve client care and streamline paperwork, yet her contributions were undervalued.

  • During COVID-19, when many therapists transitioned to virtual sessions, Kietha continued to see clients in person, ensuring their mental and emotional well-being. The emotional toll was heavy, yet her commitment never wavered.

Despite these challenges, she remained dedicated to her clients. But deep down, she knew she couldn’t stay in an environment that didn’t appreciate her efforts.

The Unfair Dismissal & A New Beginning

It was a colleague who first planted the idea: “You should start your own practice.” The thought lingered, but Kietha wasn’t ready to take the leap just yet. She continued working at the group practice, trying to make the most of the situation.

Then, after a year and a half, the unexpected happened—she was fired for an unfair reason. Just like that, everything she had poured into the practice was dismissed. The practice manager cut off all communication, leaving her in shock and hurt.

Of course, we could speculate why for years—but we won’t, lol.

But what could have been a devastating moment turned out to be a blessing in disguise. That same night, after drying her tears, she felt something unexpected:

🩷 A weight was lifted.

She realized she didn’t need that practice—she had the skills, the passion, and the drive to build something of her own.

The Birth of Heart of Mind Therapy

On October 23, 2021, Heart of Mind Therapy was born. Just a few weeks later, on November 4, 2021, it was officially established by the state of Texas.

Unlike her previous experience, where her hard work benefited someone else’s practice, this time, she was building something for herself, her family, and her clients—a space where she could provide therapy with integrity, compassion, and fairness.

Funding Her Dream—Independently

Starting a private practice isn’t easy, especially without external funding. But Kietha didn’t let that stop her.

  • She self-funded the entire practice, from licensing and office space to marketing and administrative needs.

  • She made sacrifices to ensure her vision became a reality—one where therapists were valued and clients received genuine, transformative care.

  • She continues to fund Heart of Mind Therapy independently, proving that success doesn’t always come from external investors, but from hard work, resilience, and faith in one’s purpose.

Where She Stands Today

Today, Heart of Mind Therapy is thriving. Kietha has built a name for herself as a therapist who truly cares—one who listens, advocates, and provides safe, inclusive, and effective therapy for those in need.

Her journey wasn’t smooth, but every challenge led her here. What once felt like setbacks were stepping stones. And that unfair firing? Well, it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened.

Because from that moment of pain, a legacy of healing was born. 🌸
