The Road to Heart of Mind Therapy: A Journey of Resilience

The path to building Heart of Mind Therapy was anything but smooth for Kietha Adams. It was a road paved with determination, setbacks, and, ultimately, triumph. Her story is one of perseverance—a testament to the power of believing in oneself, even when faced with adversity.

Balancing Dreams, Work, and Motherhood

Before I became a thriving business owner and therapist, I was just like many of you—juggling the demands of being a dedicated teacher and a mother of three. Pursuing my master’s degree while working full-time was no easy feat! I found myself in late-night study sessions, early-morning classes, and moments of sheer exhaustion. But through it all, I held onto my vision: I was meant to help people heal. No matter how overwhelming my responsibilities felt, I refused to let go of that dream.

The Challenges of Being an Associate Therapist

After earning my degree, I dove headfirst into the world of therapy as an associate in a group practice. Initially, I was excited to gain experience and make a difference. But soon, I realized the structure of the practice was anything but fair. The pay didn’t reflect the time and effort I poured into my clients. My hard work went unnoticed, and my dedication to improving client care felt exploited.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, while many therapists switched to virtual sessions, I continued to see my clients in person. It was tough, and the emotional toll was heavy, yet I remained committed to their mental and emotional well-being. But deep down, I knew I couldn’t stay in an environment that didn’t appreciate my efforts.

The Unfair Dismissal & A New Beginning

Then came the unexpected twist. A colleague mentioned, “You should start your own practice.” At first, I brushed it off, but the thought lingered in my mind. After a year and a half, everything changed—I was fired for an unfair reason. Just like that, all my hard work was dismissed! The practice manager cut off all communication, leaving me shocked and hurt.

We could speculate for years about why it happened, but I won’t dwell on that. What could have crushed me turned out to be a blessing in disguise. That very night, after drying my tears, I felt something unexpected: a weight was lifted. I realized I didn’t need that practice. I had the skills, the passion, and the drive to build something of my own.

The Birth of Heart of Mind Therapy

On October 23, 2021, Heart of Mind Therapy was born! Just a few weeks later, it was officially established by the state of Texas. This time, I wasn’t working for someone else’s benefit. I was building something for myself, my family, and my clients—a space where I could provide therapy with integrity, compassion, and fairness.

Funding My Dream—Independently

Starting a private practice isn’t easy, especially without external funding. But I didn’t let that stop me! I self-funded everything—from licensing and office space to marketing and administrative needs. I made sacrifices to ensure my vision became a reality—one where therapists are valued and clients receive genuine, transformative care. I continue to fund Heart of Mind Therapy independently, proving that success doesn’t always come from investors but from hard work, resilience, and faith in my purpose.

Where I Stands Today

Today, Heart of Mind Therapy is thriving! I’ve built a name for myself as a therapist who truly cares—someone who listens, advocates, and provides safe, inclusive, and effective therapy for those in need.

And let me tell you, there’s nothing more rewarding than knowing I’m making a difference in the lives of my clients!
